Moving Screens was a production by Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Fiive of us were fortunate enough to each put on individual projects at Silk Street Theatre. Our design brief was to be evolved around ‘life as we know it’ and we were limited to projecting onto 8 automated moving screens. Toby drew ideas from David Hockney’s photomontages, surreal collages and the writer Rilke’s prose. He wanted to show how people change their faces and themselves for different scenarios they find themselves in. We use our face as a mask to get what we want. Toby visualised his idea by using the moving screens as different masks. He filmed a wide range of people from different angles and used this footage to create video montages of the human face.
